Children's Book Review :: The Fairytale Hairdresser and Snow White

I only recently discovered the Fairytale Hairdresser series of books for children and I am now on the lookout for more from the series for my daughter, Lara, who is nearly 5.  The Fairytale Hairdresser and Snow White plopped through our door a few weeks ago as a surprise gift from Random House and now we absolutely LOVE the fairytale hairdresser who is the creation of author Abie Longstaff and illustrator Lauren Beard.

Kittie Lacey is the Fairytale hairdresser who styles the hair of famous fairytale characters from far, far away.  With her gossipy friends, Rapunzel, Cinderella and Rose, she finds out about a coup by an evil queen and the disappearance of the princess, Snow White.  Little does she know that later that week she herself will be harbouring the escapee in her own salon!

We loved all of the references to famous tales that we recognised.  Lara is just beginning to understand the role of the handsome prince in a fairytale and she loves the fact that the local medic, Dr. Charming comes to the rescue.  Each picture has a little hint of the traditional Snow White story and plenty of little surprises with pictures and text that you notice afresh every time we read the book.

Lara is at an age where almost every toy or book she has needs to feature a princess so it is fabulous to find a book which panders to her princessy needs but which is modern and fresh.  It is a great re-telling of the Snow White story without being just a simple reproduction.  Very clever indeed.

We can't wait to get Lara the other stories in the Fairytale Hairdresser series.
